Starting the Consultation Process
When contacting a prospective attorney, provide only the basic information needed to determine whether a consultation can be scheduled. The firm may need names for a conflict check, the general type of matter, the county involved, and any approaching court date or deadline.
Information to Have Available
- The full names of the people and businesses involved
- The county and court, if a case has already been filed
- The general subject of the matter
- Known court dates, response dates, or other time-sensitive events
- Reliable contact information and preferred times for a consultation
Do not send confidential documents or a detailed personal history before the firm confirms that it can receive them. A consultation appointment does not itself establish an attorney-client relationship; the firm should explain when representation begins and what documents must be signed.
